I first met Stephen when he joined Rugby Canada as a strength coach and return to play specialist (guru). Our first interactions were the morning prehab that he implemented into our program, a selection of mobility and strengthening exercises tailored to each athlete’s needs. Our exercises were based on functional assessments completed by Stephen and the medical team. He immediately became an integral part of our team, and my personal team that helped keep me on the field. Early in my career I would be considered injury prone, spending lots of time on the physio table and out of practice. Not long after starting my work with Stephen did this begin to change. His programming helped to not only improve my overall strength but also my overall health. Using Stephen’s words, he “bulletproofed” my body. When I did get injured, he went above and beyond to ensure my timely return to play. When I strained my shoulder a couple weeks before the start of the season his skills were put to the biggest test. We sat down and he came forward with a strategic plan to ensure I was fit and ready to go. This plan included sending out exercises to be completed at home, and specialized workout based on my limitations during our sessions. The programming we completed together directly led to me playing in Dubai 3 weeks later. He was a professional at all times while working together and could always find a way to get the best out of everyone he worked with. It could be him challenging you, or encouraging you during as big lift, whatever you needed to keep improving that was provided. I played in over 50 World Series tournaments straight and I owe a lot of that to the work I did with Stephen. Anyone looking for help to achieve greatness in sport and overall health I 10/10 recommend working with Stephen!
I worked with Stephen around 2013. I had missed out on selection for the European championships in 2013 and was determined to make the Scotland team for 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Hockey had become an incredibly fast and powerful sport with players requiring to be fast, agile, have the ability to sprint repeatedly for the whole game. Getting a S&C program just right was no easy job, especially trying to balance the running, gym sessions and the actual hockey! But working with Stephen over that period helped me achieve those goals. My repeated sprint from summer 2013 to February 2014 improved by 4% and my top speed over 30m also increased by 6%. I had one of the best body weight to power clean ratios in the entire squad and I can vividly remember the day I hit that lifetime best, thanks Stephen! These gains helped me cope with the tough pitch sessions leading towards selection and ultimately allowed me to achieve my goal - Selection! The great thing about it was I actually enjoyed going to the gym, Stephen provided great variety, made it interesting, fun and he also took my feedback on board, never easy. I know I was sad to see him leave for his next adventure and would highly recommend him as a strength and conditioning coach.
I’ve known Stephen nearly my whole life, both as a coach and as a good friend. I’ve worked with Stephen within a few different capacities but the one that stands out for me the most is his strength and conditioning coaching and training he provided me with. My dream and goal in life was always to become a professional footballer, I am thankful to say I’ve achieved my goal, as I’m currently a professional footballer for Blackburn Rovers F.C. and a lot of thanks has to go to Stephen for that. Not only has Stephen supported me as a friend throughout my journey but he’s also played a pivotal role in developing and maintaining my fitness, strength and power which provided me with the best opportunity to perform on the pitch. I started working with Stephen during my teenage years, both on the pitch and in the gym. Sessions included learning the correct techniques for lifting in the gym, which then developed into building power and strength with key lifts. Stephen has great knowledge in this department as anything we performed in the gym, he then transferred onto the pitch which helped me stay motivated and identify why we where performing each movement. On the pitch, Stephen took me for a lot of speed, change of direction and running pattern sessions which allowed me to develop good habits since a young age, looking back on these sessions I can easily say that these helped me develop into the player I am today. Not only does Stephen have great knowledge in strength and conditioning, and sport but he also has a great personality and attitude for coaching. I’ve never worked with a coach so driven and motivated to push you on to be the best person and athlete you can be as well as keeping your self motivation levels up. I can honestly admit I’ve never got bored or disliked one of Stephen's sessions or programs as there was always an end goal and structure which benefited me so much, by driving me on to reach each of the goals he set which all built towards me capitalizing on my dream. Anyone that works under Stephen will feel lucky and realize that he’s not only a great coach but a great guy in general. For anyone out there wanting to take their performance to the next level I would highly recommend getting in touch with Stephen.
I had the pleasure of working with Kate as a junior tennis player from the age of 14 to 18, when she worked with some of the best junior Scottish tennis players in Edinburgh. She was absolutely pivotal in my development as a young athlete, and she was instrumental throughout this time, including the period when I transitioned to being accepted to play division one college tennis in the US. Having worked with a number of coaches over the years, it is always clear to me those coaches who put the time into planning their sessions and researching their athletes respected sports and tailoring the coaching session to maximize the return - this is exactly what it feels like to work with Kate. No two sessions were ever the same, her drills were always specific to me as the athlete and the development of my athletic needs - most importantly, she has the ability to make her sessions extremely enjoyable, which, for me, increased my engagement. Kate is also an exceptionally versatile coach, I remember her taking me through many different sessions - from on court speed and change of direction drills, to strength and weight lifting sessions - all of which were always specific to tennis and my athletic development. As a result of Kate’s coaching, I got faster, stronger, and tougher, all whilst thoroughly enjoying her sessions and without consciously recognizing the impact she had on me and the improvement that resulted in my own game. In my opinion, Kate is one of the best coaches I have had, and I could not recommend working with Kate enough. Her knowledge, passion, preparation, and expertise are second to none, and set her worlds apart from other coaches in my opinion.
Kate Perry was my Strength & Conditioning coach at Camosun College three out of my five years and I can say without doubt that she made a lasting impression on my athletic career. Being a physically smaller player, my main goal was to get stronger and improve my agility. Kate's programs were always extensive and intense which allowed me to achieve my goals with ease. It was obvious with her highly detailed programs that she had done her research on the sport and what we needed as athletes. She would encompass prevention exercises within her programs to ensure that we would not sustain injuries commonly related to our sport. Encouraged by feedback, she consistently improved her programs, making appropriate changes to meet the teams practice schedule and student workload. In the off-season, program work was dedicated to increased strength, speed and change-of-direction - skills critical to a basketball player. During the three summers of training with Kate there was a notable correlation with the field workouts and my on-court performance. My coaches and I saw my strength and speed increase on all ends of the floor and that I no longer got pushed around in the key, enabling me to easily guard bigger players. Kate was an exceptional trainer. She exudes excellence and makes you want to work harder. She is easy to talk to and listens to her athletes needs and helps them obtain their goals in whatever way she can. I often still message Kate about programs, fitness goals, and for advice on the workouts I’m doing. I am very thankful to have had the privilege of being trained by Kate, and would recommend her to anyone.
I have worked with Kate through a number of Field Hockey programs, over the past couple of years. The physical warm-up protocol and larger strength and conditioning program she designed for FHBC is world class and has been a key factor in helping our programs grow a culture of performance responsibility and accountability within our athletes. As a result of these programs, our athletes are fit, strong and able to respond to stressful competition situations. Her programs focus on such things as coordination and movement quality, joint stability and balance, quickness and change of direction ability, overall fitness level, and health and wellness monitoring. Kate is passionate about athlete development. She is an expert in listening and understanding performance problems and coming up with forward-thinking, and innovative approaches to solving problems.
As a full time, year-round Collegiate Basketball Program, we have worked with Kate for the past 3 years. Her coaching and program cycles are invaluable to the health, performance, and success of our athletes. Her incredibly detailed programming which focus on succession of proper, functional movement specific to the athlete and the respective sport, onwards to injury prevention and then to strength and conditioning gains - sets up our athletes for continuous and consistent performance on demand. Thanks to her coaching, our athletes are fit and prepared to succeed through long and grueling seasons and most importantly, they are setup to peak during our playoff and championship periods. Kate's technical knowledge and holistic coaching abilities are only exceeded by her passion for athlete development and education. In addition to learning to train and set training standards like a professional, athletes coached by Kate leave with advanced knowledge and experience through the entire scope of strength and conditioning cycles. Kate's knowledge and abilities benefit athletes at every level and when her methods and programs are followed, athletes will surely achieve the next step in their development and performance.
